Program Description

The Certificate of Completion in Administrative Medical Assistant prepares students to work in the out-patient clinical setting and hospital institutions by providing clerical support to all health professionals by performing a variety of duties such as; Scheduling and confirming patients appointments, Handling Billing, Bookkeeping and Insurance Processing, Creating and Maintaining Medical Records, Handling Correspondence, Answering and Routing Telephone Calls, Arranging for Hospital Admissions. Students learn about medical law & ethics, medical terminology, anatomy & physiology, medical insurance, including patient registration. Administrative psychomotor competencies include; Telephone calls triage, taking messages, insurance coding and filing, greeting the patient, assist the patient with community resources, and handling emergency situations. Successfully completing the Administrative Medical Assistant coursework of 18 credit hrs. allows the student to receive a certificate of completion level 1 as an Administrative Medical Assistant, a certificate on fire safety provided by the emergency management department at EPCC and the vision & hearing certificate provided by the Texas Department of State Health Services. • Capstone course: MDCA 1421, Administrative Procedures. • Minimum grade required for specialized courses: C Important: This program does not follow the Specialized Admissions procedure, but it does require students to fulfill certain program-specific criteria including (but not limited to): minimum GPA, a background check, substance abuse screening, and immunizations/titers. Things To Know

  • Most Medical Assisting Technology courses (MDCA) have a required skills lab. MDCA courses are meant to be taken concurrently in semester blocks and are only offered once per academic year.
  • Please visit your counselor/advisor at the end of each semester to discuss your next semester courses.
  • The Medical Assisting Technology Program volunteers throughout the El Paso and Socorro Districts at various health fairs, educational events, and the Vision and Hearing Certification at Region 19.
  • Some courses in this degree plan may count toward the following: Medical Assisting Technology AAS and Certificate. Visit the above degree plans to see which courses count.
  • It should be noted that acceptance into most programs is based on a competitive ranking system, in which case, an associate degree is desirable. MDCA courses may not transfer, depending on the program requirements. Continuing your education toward another health career program may require additional core curriculum requirements.
