Program Description

The Associate of Applied Science Degree in Criminal Justice Option prepares students for entry-level careers in agencies at the local, state, and federal levels. This degree plan option emphasizes the enforcement aspect of the criminal justice system. The curriculum is designed to be completed in two years. Students enrolling in this program who plan to transfer to a four-year institution should consult an academic counselor regarding transfer requirements and transferability of these courses. Although this degree includes transferable Field of Study courses, not all courses in this degree are transferable to a Texas four-year institution. Students who wish to pursue a career in Texas law enforcement should meet the Texas Commission on Law Enforcement (TCOLE) requirements for minimum standards for employment in the law enforcement field as per commission Commission licensing Licensing rules Rule 217.1. Students must be able to successfully pass a background investigation and psychological, drug, and physical exams. The capstone course for the AAS Degree is CJCR 2380, Cooperative Education-Corrections or HMSY 2337, Managing a Unified Incident Command.

Things To Know

  • Before enrolling in CJCR 2380, students must meet with the Criminal Justice Campus Coordinator to arrange placement in an approved agency. Internships require 240 hours, and securing one may involve an application and background check.
  • Students who complete the identified Field of Study in Criminal Justice courses (F) in the degree plan are able to transfer said courses for full credit to any Texas public university/institution.
  • The Associate of Arts in Criminal Justice transfers fully to Texas public universities, but transferability outside Texas varies. Some schools accept courses as electives, while others may not. Research transfer policies for your chosen school. Also, many colleges won’t accept a “D” for transfer credit, requiring retaking the course.
  • Students transferring to the University of Texas at El Paso will need to have completed all core curriculum courses before transfer. CRIJ courses accepted at UTEP include: CRIJ 1301, 1306, 1310, 2313, 2314, and 2328.
  • For students who wish to pursue a Bachelor's Degree, EPCC also offers an Associate of Arts Degree in Criminal Justice.
  • Some courses in this degree plan may count towards the Criminal Justice AA, Law Enforcement Certificate, and Homeland Security Option AAS and Certificate. Visit the above degree plans to see which courses count.
