The EPCC Workforce Development program trains participants for employment by providing quality educational courses which promote self-sufficiency and meet employers’ needs. Workforce Development provides services to traditionally under served populations (displaced workers and unemployed and underemployed individuals). These populations can obtain supportive services for successful completion of programs and entry into productive employment with opportunities for advancement. Programs offer short-term, pre-vocational
training that includes GED instruction and pre-vocational workplace skills.
Description:
Over 9,900 students have attended EPCC Workforce Development Program courses since the Fall of 1998. Individuals can either pay for tuition themselves,
or, if they qualify, students can have their course costs sponsored by an agency.
Students receive the following services:
- Comprehensive orientation and Initial Assessment
- Vocational Guidance Assistance
- Job Placement Assistance
- Referral to Support Services agencies as applicable
Goal:
The El Paso Community College, through its Workforce Development Program targets dislocated workers and educationally and economically disadvantaged individuals who need to improve their basic academic and vocational skills to meet the demands of the evolving job market.
Courses offered:
The EPCC Workforce Development Program offers short-term, pre-vocational training that includes GED instruction and Pre-vocational workplace skills in addition to the various vocational training offerings. These include:

- Computer/Customer Service Specialist
- Introduction to Construction Technology
- Industrial Technology
- Welding
- Electrical Maintenance and Repair

Pre-Vocational Workplace Skills: ESL/Basic Skills/GED:
Non-credit courses for Workforce Development include pre-vocational workplace skills, English as a Second Language Instruction (ESL), Basic Skills Instruction, Spanish and English GED classes. The Pre-vocational Basic Skills for the Workplace courses emphasize workplace communication, math and computer literacy. The course promotes oral and written English, workplace safety, employability skills, decision-making/problem-solving, and other skills that enhance the student’s workplace performance.
Bilingual Vocational Courses:
Bilingual vocational training courses teach skills in an integrated language environment (English/Spanish), emphasizing job specific skills for individuals not fluent in English. This approach facilitates the acquisition of technical knowledge while targeting job specific communication skills.
