Medication Aide


Medication Aides are nursing assistants who have additional training to administer routine medication to persons in a Skilled Nursing Facility, MHMR facility, correctional institution, or personal care facility.  They work under the supervision of a nurse.

The Medication Aide course at El Paso Community College is approved by the Texas Department of Aging and Disability Services.  The course consists of 130 hours of classroom/laboratory instruction and 10 hours of supervised internship. Students must finish the 140 hours prior to sitting for the state exam. Courses are offered in the evening at the Rio Grande campus.

Admission Requirements:

  • Minimum 18 years of age
  • High school diploma or GED
  • Tested 10th grade reading level
  • Clearance from current employer stating student is free of communicable diseases and in suitable physical and emotional health to administer medications

Students must be employed in a long-term care facility throughout the length of the class.
