How the library organizes
its materials
Movie
version
- Academic libraries in
U.S. organize their materials following the Library of Congress Classification
System (L.C.).
- The Library of Congress
is one of the most important libraries in the world. Their system consists
of assigning letters to the different areas of the human knowlegde. Following
their system creates consistency among academic libraries. The Valle Verde
Library is organized the same way as N.Y. University, U.C.L.A., Chicago University,
U.T.E.P., etc.
- Library of Congress Classification
outline appears.
- The L.C. classification
(letters followed by numbers) is placed on a label on the spine of the book.
The books are shelved first in alphabetical order, then in numerical order.
- Once you understand this
system, you can browse the shelves in any library using L.C.C.S. (Library
of Congress Classification System). For example, all the books about medicine
are going to be under the letter R, all the books about
art under the letter N, etc.
