How to Use the Online Databases
for Career Research.
We are going to do a
KEYWORD SEARCH, a SUBJECT SEARCH and a NATURAL LANGUAGE SEARCH using 3 different
databases.
Keyword Search
- On the Valle Verde Library
Home page <www.epcc.edu/vvlib/>
select Online Databases.
- Select Vocational &
Career Collection.
- This is a keyword search
screen. It has as default the AND "connector," so you can connect the different
concepts.
- Select "full text."
- Type on the search box
the name of your career; add the keyword "career." For example:
secondary school teacher ANDa career.
- Click the Search button.
- Select an article
- To print, click the Print
button. On the new window, click the Print button, again.
- The article is reformatted
to plain text. Now, you can print or save as.
- Go to File menu. Select
Save as. Name your file.
- Make sure, in the library,
to select drive D; E; F; or G.
Subject search
- Click from the V.V. homepage
<www.epcc.edu/vvlib/> on Online Databases.
- Click on "General
Interest Articles."
- We are using the database
Academic OneFile.
- Click Subject Guide
Search.
- Do a "subject"
search. For example, "chemists"
- Click "Search."
- Click "narrow by
subdivision."
- An alphabetical listing
of subdivisions appear. Scroll down to find a subdivision of your choice.
For example: "research,"
"study and teaching," "training," etc.
- Once you find an article
you like, click full text. Now, you can email, save or print it.
- To print or save as,
click the "print" link on the box on the right.
- Click on "File"
on the toolbar.
- Select "Save As"
or "Print."
- To save as a text file
you must select .txt from the "save as type" box. This will
allow to read your article in any word processor.
Natural Language Search
- Select Online Databases
- Select the General Interest
link.
- Click on E-Library
Curriculum Edition.
- On the search box, type
any sentence. For example: How do I become a ballet dancer?
- Select your article.
- To print the article,
click Printer Friendly Version link. Now, you are ready to print or save as.
