What is Internet?

A worldwide collection of interconnected computer networks. The Internet backbone in the US is the National Science Foundation Network (N.S.F.Net). Basic Services in the Internet are: Electronic Mail(E-Mail), File Transfer(F.T.P.), and Login to remote computers(Telnet). The Net has open access- for a price- to those who want to join and do not have access through their academic, public or corporate institutions. Some Internet concepts:

Blog

A shared online diary

Browser
An interactive program used to access and retrieve information from the WWW.

Client
Software which requests information or service from a server.

F.T.P.
File Transfer Protocol. Lets you transfer files from one computer to another.

Home Page
Gives you information about the site and pointers to other links.

Server
Software which is used to deliver information to a client.

Twitter

A mini blog. No more than 140 characters. The equivalent of "What's up?"

U.R.L.
Uniform Resource Locator. The address of a file on the W.W.W.

Wiki

Software that allows users to edit the content of a site

World Wide Web
Distributed multimedia hypertext (text, graphics, sound, video) document system. Highlighted words will link you to different documents, in a non sequencial manner, and with a consistent interface.
