Easy Ways to Search for Love Poems

• Use the Catalog
  • Do a KEYWORD search.
  • Type “love poems.”
  • Or if you know an author, do an AUTHOR search.
  • Type author's last name, followed by the author's first name.

Example: Dickinson, Emily

• Look for complete works, anthologies or selected poems.
• Go upstairs for your book and look in the index for the title of the poem.

 

• Use these Databases
  • Twentieth-Century American Poetry for 50,000 Poems from books by 300+ poets, generally including any dedications, notes, acknowledgments, prefaces, introductions, and epigraphs that appeared in the original books of poems.
  • Twentieth-Century English Poetry for 598 volumes of poetry by 283 poets from 1900 to the present.

 

• Use the Internet
• Go to Google Directory
• Type “love poems” {enclose the term in QUOTATION MARKS}.
• Evaluate the results: many are “submitted” poems or commercial sites.

 

• Did you forget who wrote the poem?
• Did you forget the title of the poem?
• Do you just remember a few lines?
• Would you like to know when was a poem published?
• Would you like to research literary criticism about the poem?

• Go to the Reference Desk and Ask a Librarian for Assistance!
