CALL
NUMBER
The
numbers and letters that appear on the label on the spine of books. This alphanumerical
system reflects the subject of the Library of Congress. See also below under LC
CIRCULATION
Library
material that can be checked out for a specific period of time.
CITATION
A citation provides basic information about a work in order that it may be identified
and located. A book citation will include author, title, place of publication,
publisher, date.
CROSS
REFERENCE
A reference
from one term to another. Ex: Capital Punishment. See Death Penalty.
DATABASE
Collection of records organized by fields (title, subject, author, etc.)
HOLD
To reserve a circulating book for a patron.
INDEX
Alphabetical
listing of names, places, subjects, along with the number of the pages in which
they are mentioned or discussed on the book or periodical.
JOURNAL
Periodical
publication that is scholarly in nature.
LC or LIBRARY of CONGRESS CLASSIFICATION
A system of classifying or
organizing the materials by subject. Each subject is represented by a different
letter or letters. For example all material on art will be found under the letter
N; all material on medicine will be found under the letter R.
ON-LINE CATALOG
Electronic
listing of the materials owned by E.P.C.C. Libraries.
ONLINE
DATABASES
Subscription service also
known as the closed/invisible Web to find articles mostly in periodicals.
Some with full text and remote
access. These proprietary databases are available only to registered students
and are not searched by Google or any other search engine.
PERIODICALS
Any publication published on a regular basis, more frequently than once a
year. This includes magazines, newspapers, journals, newsletters.
PRIMARY
DOCUMENTS/SOURCES
Firsthand/eyewitness accounts.
Ex: oral histories, photographs, artifacts, interviews, diaries, government
documents, etc.
REFERENCE
Materials used
for consultation, for concise, general or specific information, facts, statistics,
etc. Examples of reference works are encyclopedias, dictionaries, almanacs, handbooks
or manuals, and directories.
RESERVE
Material
reserved by instructors which does NOT circulate.
SEARCH
ENGINE
A program that searches for documents/sites on the Web.
SUBJECT HEADINGS
Uniform terms used by libraries nationwide to designate particular topics.
TWITTER
Microblogging of 140 characters
UNION LIST
Alphabetical listing
of all the periodicals available at the Community College Libraries.
WEB 2.0
Second generation of the
Web with new technology for communicating and sharing, such as social networking,
wikis, etc.
WIKI
A collaborative site that
anyone can edit/contribute to.
