APA Tips

  1. Titles of articles - Capitalize first word only & proper names.
  2. Titles of books- Capitalize first word only & proper names.
  3. Titles of journals, magazines & newspapers- Capitalize first letters of words. (Example: New York Times)
  4. If no date if available, write n.d. in parentheses (n.d.)
  5. If no author is available, start with the title, then date.
  6. Include journal issue if each issue is paginated separately (each starting on p.1)
  7. If the publisher is an university and name of the state is part of the name of the university, do not include the publisher's location.
  8. Omit terms such as Inc, Publishers, Co., but retain the words Press and Books
  9. If multiple locations, list the location listed first.
  10. When author is the publisher, do not repeat authors name as publisher. Just use the word Author to indicate publisher.
  11. When DOI is available, you most include it. This is the most important retrieval information.
  12. If no DOI is available, then provide URL.
  13. No retrieval date is necessary.
  14. Give all page numbers for discontinuous pages. (pp. 3, 5, 8, 28)
  15. Include in brackets description of supplemental material or any non routine information. (letters to the editor, maps, podcast, etc.)
  16. Place information about the book edition in parentheses (Vol, rev. ed., etc.)
  17. If book is online, the electronic retrieval statement takes the place of the publisher and the location. For example:

Enelow, W.S. (1997). 100 Winning resumes for $100, 000 + jobs: Resumes that can change your life. Retrieved from http://www.netlibrary.com

18. For reviews, identify in brackets the type of medium being reviewed (DVD, book, motion picture).
