Testing Services: Placement Testing...

Placement Testing Services - helping students achieve their educational dreams with quality academic skills assessment!

We want you to be successful in your college courses so your college placement test is an important first step for you.  The course placement tests will assess your current skill levels in reading, writing, and math (or English language proficiciency if you are an ESL student).  Once you know where you are now, then you can enroll in the right courses to build on your current skills. Your placement test scores will determine which courses you may enroll in at EPCC

If you are a new student, the Admissions Office will provide you with the proper test referral form needed to schedule your placement test. You must complete placement testing before attending a New Student Orientation.

If you are a retuning or transfer student, check with your counselor or advisor about whether or not you need to take (or retake) one or more parts of the placement test.

Before you take the placement test, take time to refresh your reading, writing, and math skills so that you can do your very best on your test.  You'll find lots of helpful information about the placement test on our website and through other EPCC resources available to help you make the most of your college studies.

We use the ACCUPLACER® computerized tests to assess students' academic skills in reading, writing, and math.  Once you and your counselor/advisor know what your current academic skill levels are, you can then enroll in the right level of college courses for you.

Your ACCUPLACER test scores may also be used to meet ATB (ability to benefit) standards if you do not have a HS diploma or GED credential and want to apply for federal financial aid.

EPCC offers Placement Test Overview workshops (sponsored by Title V) to help you refresh your academic skills before you take the placement test. These two hour workshops are free of charge and may help you score higher on your placement test.  There are also a variety of test practice and skill refresher options available on our "Test Practice" page.

If you require specialized testing accommodations (based on documented physical or learning disabilities) you should contact the Center for Students with Disabilities at 831-2426 before you schedule your placement test.

photo ID is always required at any time that you take a placement test.   A simple four function calculator is permitted when taking our math placement tests.   All test rooms are equipped with electronic observation systems to insure a secure test environment.

EPCC and UTEP both use the ACCUPLACER® tests for course placement purposes.  If you have taken the ACCUPLACER® at EPCC, you do not have to re-test at UTEP (unless your want to to improve your test scores for placement purposes).  The same applies if you tested at UTEP and now want to attend EPCC.  You can use the Request for Release of Test Scores form to request that your ACCUPLACER® test scores be shared with the other institution.
