New Horizons
The Instructional Division of El Paso Community College sponsored the second New Horizons focus group session on February 15, 2002. The theme for this session was “Tech-Knowlogy” and the presentations focused on what the college family needs to know in order to prepare ourselves and our students for the changing world of technology.
The session ran from 12:00 to 4:30 at the Transmountain Forum, with refreshments served during the intermission and a reception following the session. Presenters included:

Dr. George Boggs, President of the American Association of Community Colleges
Dr. Mark David Milliron, President of the League for Innovation
Dr. Gerardo de los Santos, Vice President of Advancement for League of Innovation
Mr. Richard Thompson, Senior Director, Project Management at DIRECTV

Issues being considered for future sessions include Learning Communities, Alternative Delivery Systems, Innovations in Teaching, Student Success Centers, and other topics dealing with the recruitment and retention of students.

The objective of the New Horizons program is to bring together experts in selected fields to address issues of importance for the college's administrators, faculty, staff and students. Having contact with and hearing from these experts will help EPCC to:

  • maintain strong instructional programs,
  • plan new instructional programs, and
  • develop partnerships with business, industry and other educational institutions.

With diminishing travel budgets, few EPCC employees are able to attend conferences that traditionally have provided opportunities for professional development on a regional or national level. New Horizons is designed to provide the same level of exposure right here in El Paso, and for a much larger group of employees.
