EPCC’s Research Initiative for Scientific Enhancement (RISE) to the Challenge Program is funded by a grant from the MBRS-RISE Program at the National Institutes of Health (NIH). The RISE to the Challenge Program consists of Student, Faculty and Community Development Activities. All activities are aimed at providing underepresented students with the tools to succeed in college and pursue a biomedical research career and a Ph.D.
Once accepted into the program, students will be paid to work in a biomedical research laboratory at EPCC or other local research institutions including UTEP, and Texas A&M.
Eligibility:
Selection into this program will be based on the applicant’s academic qualifications (GPA >3.0), financial need, and applicants’ motivation to pursue a career in the biomedical field.
RISE students must be enrolled at EPCC fulltime (12 credit hours) and maintain a GPA greater than 3.0 to be accepted and remain in the program.
RISE students must participate in and successfully complete all RISE activities in order to stay in the program.
Once accepted, students will be placed in a research laboratory with an advanced researcher, post doctoral fellow, or faculty mentor whom students will assist with a research project. Students can expect to:
- Interact with advanced students and scientists
- Familiarize themselves with a research environment
- Learn from peers what it takes to succeed in a university setting
- Understand what it takes to carry out a successful research projects
- Learn the basics in laboratory techniques, safety procedures, and ethical practices
Biomedical Seminars:
Students will attend biomedical seminars. These seminars will be held at EPCC, UTEP, Texas A&M, or NMSU. Each seminar will be followed by an informal discussion of the information presented.
