How to Cite Sources

Where to get help

Research handbooks typically have sample papers with Works Cited pages on which you can model your research papers.  Here are examples of both the MLA and APA styles.

For an online presentation by an EPCC instructor of the MLA Works Cited system, consult: http://www.epcc.edu/Faculty/joeo/classrooms/research_slides.html

A citation for an online source contains all the information that a regular citation has but also includes the date an item is accessed and the URL in angle brackets

Here is an example of a citation using MLA style:

Uríbarri, Fátima.  "Harry Potter Engancha a 35 Millones de
Lectores: Hechizados por la Lectura."  Epoca
         10 Dec. 2000: 70.  Informe.  Gale Group. E.P.C.C. Libraries,
El Paso, TX.  11 Apr. 2001
         <http://infotrac.galegroup.com/itweb?db=IFME>.

For examples on how to cite from the online databases using MLA style, go to the Northwest Library page Citing Online Sources MLA Style.   For citing print sources, go to the Northwest Library page Citing Print Sources MLA Style.  For more information,
consult  James D. Lester's "Citing Cyberspace":   http://www.apsu.edu/~lesterj/CYBER3.HTM.  The Modern Language Association's website is http://www.mla.org

Here is an example of a citation of a journal article using APA style:

Mills, N. (2001).  Re-inventing life: xenotransplantation.
Journal of the American Medical Association,  42,
993-99.  Retrieved June 20, 2001, from FirstSearch database
(Health Source) on the World Wide Web:
         http://firstsearch.oclc.org/next=%first

For more information, see the EPCC Library's page Citing Online Sources APA Style.  The American Psychiatric Association's website for help with their style is:  http://www.apastyle.org/
