Citations

A citation is an entry in an essay that contains the basic information your reader will need to find a particular article. Usually, it includes the author, title of the the article, title of the journal or magazine, illustration, date, page. It may also include a brief summary or abstract of the article, as well as a list of subjects that the article is about.

There are various systems for making citations in essays. English instructors and instructors in other humanities courses require the Works Cited system devised by the Modern Language Association, or MLA. (The sciences usually require the American Psychological Association, or APA, system, which features the dates of articles prominently.)

And there are other systems. Consult your instructor for directions. Also, you should have a research handbook that contains guides for various kinds of sources you will use.

For books, you normally need the following information if it is available:

  • Author(s)
  • Title of the book
  • Editor, translator or compiler (if relevant)
  • Edition (if relevant)
  • Volume (if relevant)
  • Series name (if relevant)
  • Place, publisher and date of publication
  • Page numbers
  • Total number of volumes (if relevant)

For periodicals, you need the following information:

  • Author(s)
  • Article title
  • Name of the periodical
  • Series number (if relevant)
  • Volume and issue number for journals (weekly and monthly magazines do not require this)
  • Date of publication
  • Page numbers
