Web Savvy: Navigation
and Evaluation of Information
Navigating the Internet
URLs
You can navigate through the Internet by directly typing the URL (uniform
resource locator), or what is commonly known as the address,
of a link in the Address box of a browser (Netscape, Explorer).
Browsing
This is done by clicking on hyperlinks, which are typically underlined and
in color. You will also notice the mouse pointer change from an arrow to a
pointer in the form of a hand.
Searching
This is accomplished through search engines, including metasearch engines,
which use multiple search engines at the same time.
- Yahoo
(www.yahoo.com) is a search
engine that searches by category and caters mostly to academia.
- Altavista
(www.altavista.com) is another
popular search engine that searches by keyword.
These three are examples
of metasearch engines:
When selecting the best search
engine for your research, you can begin with Rice University's "Internet Navigation
