Web Savvy -- Navigation and Evaluation of Information

The Internet

The Internet is a fun and effective research tool. This module will teach you how to navigate the Internet. You will learn about browsers URL's, and conducting effective searches. It is important that you question the credibility of the documents you obtain through your searches.

Browsers

Programs such as Netscape and Explorer are called "browsers." They allow you to scan the Internet. They make it easy to find information available on the Internet. Search engines were developed to make the process easier. Search engines are specialized indexes for the Internet, similar to the New York Times Index of the New York Times newspaper. They organize information for retrieval. No one search engine is identical to another. For instance, Yahoo indexes mostly academic material, whereas Northern Light indexes mostly business information.

Web navigation can be accomplished by either using URLs, browsing, or searching.
