Using the Online Catalog

Searching for information on authors

Finding criticism about an author is easy with using either keyword or subject.  For example, if you were looking on books that criticize Ernest Hemingway's writing,  you could use keywords hemingway and criticism.

Or you can use subject searching.  To find a biography or a criticism of Edgar Allan Poe, you could do a subject search using the author’s name.  Type his last name first. Try this search for Poe, Edgar Allen as a subject.

And now, as a contrast, try the same search with Poe, Edgar Allan as an author.  What did you find?  You should have found books written BY Edgar Allan Poe, not books about him.  See the difference?  Again, note that to search by author, put the writer's LAST NAME first.  For example, search for Octavio Paz as an author:   paz octavio

Title Searching

A title search should be used when you want a specific book. You must know at least the first few words of the title. This information could be found in footnotes and bibliographies of other books and articles on your subject.

For example: search for the title:  Lonesome DoveNotice that I only typed:  lonesome d  (and I didn't have to capitalize any words!)
