Using the Online Catalog

More on Keyword Searching

Here's an example of using AND for a more focused or narrower result.  Search "suicide" by itself (suicide) and then combine it with "teenagers" (suicide and teenagers).   Do you see how you have reduced the number of records, and focused your search?

Using NOT will also narrow your findings. For example:  search mexico and women, but some of them deal with New Mexico and women.  So you can insert NOT new and you'll eliminate those items that deal with New Mexico from your results.  Your search will then be:  mexico and women not new.  See the results of this search.

If you want to broaden your search use OR between terms that are similar. After choosing your terms, combine them with OR for the most complete search.

Let's take our previous example of "feminist" as keyword.  What other words could we include that are similar?  You might say "feminism" or "womens rights".  OK, let's try those words.  Searching feminist by itself yields over 100 records.  Combining it with feminism:  feminist or feminism yields over 300.  Now let's add  "womens rights":  feminist or feminism or womens rights and we find over 400.
