Using the Online Catalog

Keyword searching

A keyword search is the broadest type of search you can do and will retrieve the most book titles from the catalog. It is the best way to start because it looks through subject headings, titles and notes. The search results contain not only books but also records of multimedia materials (videos, e-books, etc.).

Search feminist as a keyword.  You will find over 100 examples.  If you look at the title 20th century with Mike Wallace, you'll see that your search found "feminist" in the summary of the videotape, and you'll see the it's red to make it easier to see.  Doing a subject search would not have found this video.

Type words that express your search.  The KEY to keyword searching is to use LESS rather than more.  Start out with one or two words, and if you retrieve too many items, add another word to narrow down your search.

You do NOT have to use " AND" between your words, although in some databases it is necessary, so it's a good practice to get in the habit of using "and". This specifies that you want both terms to be included in your search.  See the next page for more.
