This year's Borderlands staff said goodbye to last
year's assistant editors and welcome to the beautiful and
talented Linda Tarin. Linda is a student pursuing a career in
nursing, in addition to being a wife and mother. Lynn Cordova
agreed to edit the magazine for a second year, one of only two
editors who have done so in the publication's history.
Upon reflection of this year's
Borderlands and an emergence of worldwide interest in
customs and crafts, we have come to the conclusion that
publications such as ours are very valuable to use in educating
our children. When Lynn interviewed local black historian Bob
Snead and his wife Joyce, she was reminded that our children and
other generations since 1960's have no idea of the significant
strides made for the rights of humanity.
So many ethnic groups are sharing their customs and crafts
with a whole new generation, which probably has never known
firsthand the misery of segregation or prejudice. It is up to us
as parents to teach the joys of our own traditions to our
children. We hope that the custom we teach will not include the
mistrust and fear of the differences of other peoples of the
world.
Students involved in researching their topics on border
customs and crafts experienced the rich tradition of the many
peoples who make up the heritage of our border area. They
interviewed people, participated in the custom, observed the
custom or the making of the craft, in addition to reading about
it. They have found a new appreciation for the people, the
artistry, the celebrations and the music of our border area.
Filled with admiration, they look at their surroundings through
new eyes, seeing the beauty of the traditions and craftsmanship
which have surrounded them all their life. Others have made new
friends through their research.
We who live here on the border are very fortunate to have the
opportunity to enjoy the diversity of cultures represented by
our neighbors. Borderlands has tried to include
different groups, but due to the limited size of our publication
and little time to further research some topics, we were not
able to include them all in this issue. We hope you enjoy our
10th anniversary issue.
