Library Terms
- Abstract
- An abstract is a concise summary of an article.
- Bibliography
- A list of books and non-print material.
- Biography
- An account or written history of someone's life.
- CD-ROM Indexes
- Computerized indexes (Compact Disk Read Only Memory)
- Circulating Material
- Material that may be checked out of the Library for a specific
period of time.
- Citation
- A citation provides basic information about a work in order that it may be identified and located.
A book citation will include author, title, place of publication, publisher, date.
- Index
- Alphabetical listing of names, places, subjects, along with
the number of the pages on which they are mentioned or discussed on the book or periodical.
- LC or Library of Congress Classification System
- A system of classifying or organizing the materials by subject. Each subject
is represented by a different letter or letters. For example all material on art
will be found under the letter N; all material on medicine will be found under
the letter R.
- Periodicals
- Any publication published on a regular basis,
more frequently than once a year.
This includes magazines, newspapers, journals, newsletters.
- Reference
- Materials used for consultation.
They provide concise general or specific information, facts, statistics, etc.
Examples of reference works are encyclopedias, dictionaries, almanacs,
handbooks or manuals, and directories.
- Subject Headings
- Uniform terms used by libraries nationwide to designate particular topics.
- Union List
- Alphabetical listing of all the periodicals available at the
Community College Libraries.
