How to Search for a Movie Review
- Select a Movie.
- Look for the Year the Movie Was Released.
An excellent source for this is:
- Leonard Maltin's Movie and Video Guide (Ref PN1992.8.F5L36)
- This guide includes more than 19,000 entries in alphabetical order by title.
It also has a listing of the cast and a summary of the movie. Films are rated by a star system :
**** for the best and 1/2 for the worst.
- For Criticism Consult:
- Magill's Cinema Annual (Ref PN1993.45.M34)
Each annual covers the preceding year (e.g., Look for the year 1988 if the movie was released in 1987.)
You will find information about production, casting, etc., followed by a
critical essay. At the end of each essay is a list of sources
where the film has been reviewed! Check our Periodicals Holdings (Union List)
to see if the library subscribes to any of the magazines/newspapers mentioned on the list.
- Magill's Survey of English Language Films (Ref PN1993.45.M3)
Articles in these series stress those aspects most crucial to the motion picture success and/or importance.
- Magill's Survey of Cinema: Silent Films (Ref PN1993.5.M46)
Comprehensive study of silent films from 1902 to 1936.
For Current Movies Look in the C.D.-ROM Periodical Indexes or Online Databases:
- Ebsco
- NewsBank
- New York Times
For Older Movies Consult our Paper Indexes:
- Reader's Guide to Periodical Literature (1959- )
Look under the heading "Motion Pictures Reviews"
- New York Times Index (1939- )
Look under the heading "Motion pictures"
- NewsBank
