Health Literacy
Understanding health information. For patients, it means being able to follow
instructions
from a doctor, nurse or pharmacist; manage a chronic illness; and/or take medication
properly. For health care practitioners, it is about helping patients understand
and act on health care information.
"The goal of the Health Literacy initiative is to increase health literacy and awareness about
different diseases, and to promote health and prevention of chronic diseases. It is estimated
that over half of all Americans are impacted by health literacy difficulties, which include
problems communicating with their medical provider, reading and following instructions on
their medicine bottles, or completing medical and insurance paperwork.
