One of the newest talents recruited by the Tejano baseball team is freshmen, Oscar Garcia.
Garcia plays center field for the Tejanos. He is playing on a partial scholarship. Garcia is attending the business program and hoping to eventually continue his academic and athletic career to a four-year college.
Garcia was recruited from Americas High School, where he was quarter back on the football team, as well as a member of the baseball team.
When asked why he chose baseball over football he said, “Baseball gives me a better opportunity to fulfill my dreams,” he said.
His parents have played a role in Garcia’s career. Since his dad was a truck driver and not always available, his mom would take him to all his practices and games. His dad gave him the inspiration for the game.
“I loved playing baseball because of my dad,” said Garcia.
Garcia’s role model and inspiration is his dad. He picked up his swing and how he held the bat from his dad.
“My dad is like a best friend to me,” said Garcia.
When he is having a hard day at practice Garcia tells himself, “I really want this.” And it encourages him to try his best.
He plans to play baseball and attend community college for two years, then transfer to a four-year university.
As well as playing as a team, the players have study hall, where they work as a team to keep their grades up.
“We do our homework on our own and the players help each other,” said Garcia.
When asked why he joined the Tejanos, Garcia said, “The top coaches in the nation are at EPCC.”
“This year there is a lot of potential,” he said. “I have high hopes for the team.”
