Scorsese’s next masterpiece
By Jesus Ordoñez

Most of us have all seen at least one or two Martin Scorsese’s films. Some of his greatest works include Taxi Driver, Good Fellas, Casino, and one of his most recent works, Gangs of New York. There is no question that Scorsese has a tremendous talent for film making and has proved it once more.

Scorsese’s newest film, The Departed, hit theatres this October 6th. It’s already number one on the Box Office Charts, and has blown other films like The Texas Chain Saw Massacre: The Beginning, out of the water by grossing $27 million it’s first weekend.

That’s no surprise from a film with an A-list cast including Jack Nicholson, Leonardo De Caprio, Matt Damon, Mark Wahlberg, Alec Baldwin and Martin Sheen.

In this action packed thriller, Scorsese brings back all the elements of a great crime story. This film is about a good cop and a bad cop intertwined with the Irish Mob in Boston. Billy Costigan, (De Caprio) is an undercover cop trying to bust Frank Castello, (Nicholson). Castello is head of the Irish mob who has Colin Sullivan (Damon), working for him.

Sullivan is a high ranked officer in the Boston Police Department as well as an informant for Castello. His main job is to keep the cops off Castello’s back. People begin to suspect that there is a rat in Castello’s crew and a crooked cop in the Boston Police Department.

Tensions rise as both groups struggle to find who the rats are. While the police department and Castello try to find them, Costigan and Sullivan are out to find each other as well. This is a scenario, which turns out quite bloody for both parties.

Overall, I thought it was a great film, and Scorsese, once again, out did himself. I give this movie two thumbs up. The film is an action-packed drama with suspense. It has great cinematography, a great story line, and a sensational cast, which I think are key ingredients for a great film. I was glued to the screen from the opening scene following all the way to the twist ending.

Since this movie is geared towards more of a mature audience, I would recomend that those of the ages of 13 and older take a chance on this great movie. The film does contain a great deal of violence and adult content, and isn’t as suitable for a younger crowd or those under the age of 13.

Other than that, if you are a big fan of Scorsese’s excellent work, you will find The Departed as nothing short of utterly spectacular.
