Students get help from Job Placement
By Pan Chudabala

The Job Placement Center provides current EPCC students and graduates with information about careers. “We are here to assist and prepare students ahead of time so that when they go and apply for jobs, they do not make mistakes,” said Silvia Dominguez, employment specialist at Cooperative Education and Job Placement.

The department provides students with referrals, computers to do job searches, fax machines for resumes and a variety of assistance as needed. Employers also receive benefits from the Job Placement Center. They list job openings with the department and applicants are screened then selected based upon requirements and qualifications.

“The department has to make sure that students meet all the requirements given by employers. That way it is better for both sides in the long run,” said Pete Mora, employment specialist.

In order to receive assistance from the Job Placement Center, students are required to attend a one-time, pre-employment training workshop. This is to obtain basic knowledge about what to expect and how to prepare prior to the employment process. Basic personal information is filled out at the end of the workshop training. Once the pre-employment workshop is attended, students can be immediately assisted with resume preparation and job application completion.

“Right after they’re done with the workshop, we make sure students are qualified for jobs they’re interested in. We are here to support them with everything they need,” said Dominguez.

The department assists applicants by preparing a resume in the correct and proper format. They also make sure it contains applicants’ updated personal information. A list of job interview most frequently asked questions is also provided at the center. Simulated job interviews are available upon request. The department welcomes visitors to come by and take advantage of continuous source of prospective employers and applicants.

“I believe this center benefits students a lot because we assist them from scratch, all the way up to gaining self-confidence,” said Laura Beltran, employment specialist.
The Job Placement Center also provides information about temporary entry-level jobs that students might be interested in while attending college. All the services are available at no cost to either applicants or employers. New jobs openings are posted daily at every campus job placement office.

“We encourage students to visit our office and receive all the benefits we provide, but first come, first serve,” said Dominguez.
