During
Breast Cancer Awareness week at El Paso Community College Campus Life
representatives hope to educate people about Cancer.
“Passionately Pink for the Cure” is an annual event held
at EPCC to promote breast cancer awareness. This year’s event
will run from Oct. 23 -27 at each campus. One in eight women will
be diagnosed with breast cancer in their lifetime. “We have
seen an increase and interest in people about breast cancer,”
said Davette E. Alonzo, Campus Life Representative.
Breast
cancer is a type of cancer where cells in the breast tissue divide
and grow without the normal control. About 80 percent of breast cancers
originate in the mammary ducts, while about 20 percent arise in the
lobules.
Cancerous tumors in the breast usually grow very slowly, so that by
the time one is large enough to be felt as a lump, it may have been
growing for as long as ten years.
An estimated 212,920 new cases of breast cancer are expected to occur
among women in the United States during 2006. An estimated 40,970
women will die from breast cancer. It is estimated that 1,720 men
will be diagnosed and 460 men will die of breast cancer during 2006.
In addition to invasive breast cancer, 61,980 new cases of breast
cancer are expected to occur among women in 2006.
“At one of these events was a student educated about self-breast
exams. Once she had been informed at one of these events about the
breast cancer, she got home and discovered she had a lump. Soon after
she went to see her doctor, found it was a benign tumor and it was
removed,” said Alonzo. “If it had not been for the education
promoted by this organization, she may not have known at all. It made
her aware of cancer and helped her.”
To support this event, every time a purchase of a pink Yoplait yogurt
top, it will donate ten cents to help find a cure for breast cancer.
Yoplait donates up to $1.5 million every year, so every lid matters.
With donations, research and advancements in technology are sought
and will help further assist people with breast cancer.
