SGA looking to fill 38 senate vacancies
By Christian Betancourt

The Student Government Association is currently looking for 38 members to fill out the vacancies on the senate.

SGA at EPCC offers students a chance to develop leadership and networking abilities, along with a chance to travel.

This organization represents the voice of students at EPCC according to Arvis Jones, director of Student Leadership and Campus Life.

SGA currently has only 12 of the 50 positions filled.

“It’s always hard to get students involved,” said Jones. She has tried to get students to sign-up, but believes that they are not aware of what SGA does or simply do not have the time to commit.

Senator positions are the only available positions right now. Once you are senator, you can move on to executive positions. Members of SGA are required to attend 25 hours of office time and volunteer for events that SGA support.

The SGA agenda includes, during the 2007-2008 year, the renovation of the carpeting and furniture of the Valle Verde cafeteria, the creation of a student union at all EPCC campuses and ways to offer EPCC students health insurance.

Members of SGA have the opportunity to go to the National Conference of Student Leadership, which is held in Florida.

The trip is free for the student participants.

Officers of SGA also receive a stipend ranging from $200 to $325 a month, depending on their office position.

Funding for SGA comes from tuition, and it currently has a budget of $300,000 for the 2007-2008 school year.

This money goes towards the Leadership EPCC program, intramural sports, Campus Life and other programs such as Shakespeare on-the-Rocks and the Chopin Music Festival.

“Being part of SGA gives students a chance to develop leadership skills, opportunity for growth, networking and fundraising” said Jones.

To become a member, students need to fill out an application form, maintain a GPA of 2.5 and collect 150 signatures from fellow students. Each campus can have up to eight senator positions. Currently, all campuses have representation except Rio Grande.

“Come join us, we need your voice!” said Jones.
