David Grisman is the king of Bluegrass
By Luis Prats

October 3rd is a day to mark on your calendars because it’s the day that the new David Grisman albums come out. That’s right not one, but two new albums. They include over 40 years of Grisman playing the mandolin.

These are two of the best, yet very different albums. The two albums are called David Grisman Quintet, Dawg’s Groove and David Grisman, Blue Grass Experience.

Both albums are acoustic in sound, but don’t let that fool you, they both show the distinct rhythmic sound of Grisman. Dawg’s Groove that can only be described as a fusion of world sounds. It is pure playing at its best with no one singing. This album is definitely a relaxing and calm sound before he goes into a crazy jam that has a feel of ranging from Latin to what has to be called gypsy music.

The David Grisman Quintet has two albums coming out in October.

The David Grisman Quintet is made up of David Grisman on mandolin, Jim Kerwin on bass, George Marsh on percussion, Enrique Coria on guitar and Matt Eakle on flute. They have been together for 30 years and are still learning and playing awesome new sounds. The other album entitled, David Grisman Bluegrass Experience, is exactly what it’s called, good, old bluegrass.

This album is bluegrass all the way. It’s a good, old picking and a licking type album. Now for those who aren’t familiar with this style of music, it’s a type of folk music.
Unlike Dawg’s Groove, this has singing in it and the band is made up of different people. In this album the members change to Keith Little on banjo, guitar and vocals, Jim Nunally on guitar and vocals, David Grisman on mandolin and vocals, Chad Manning on fiddle and Samson Grisman on bass.

In this album you can really hear and feel the folk, or what Grisman calls “dawg” music, which is a combination of sounds.

This has the classic ‘me and my girl’ type country bluegrass sound.

The two albums will go great in the collection of other albums that Grisman has had over his 40 years of mandolin playing.

Now for those who don’t know who Grisman is, all you need to know is that he has played with many famous people, such as Jerry Garcia from the Grateful Dead.

His style is very different from many others and he has really pushed the envelope when it comes what people traditionally play on the mandolin. I think people will love the two albums, but I really liked the first album the most because of its mix of jazz, Latin, gypsy and bluegrass.
