Kids enjoy college too

Every child has different interests, which makes it easier to choose from the variety of courses offered at the Children’s College at EPCC, whether it be related to academics , arts or sports.

“The Children’s College has been around for more than 10 years,” said Melissa Sanchez, manager and co-director of the program. “It was initially introduced by, now director, Kathy Lopez. The college has grown since 10 years ago and still offers children the chance to discover talents and interests in activities that they may end up continuing far into the future.”

Courses such as web page exploration, acting class, martial arts, ballet, adventures in reading, and math master, gives many children the chance to explore beyond just physical activities and artistic abilities.

“The courses are mostly introductory courses, which sets up a base structure of what each individual course offers,” said Sanchez. One of the only courses that offers leverage past an introductory course is Piano for children.

In fact, piano for children is one of the courses that’s highly favored and in constant demand. Closely following behind is the majority of the Academic Enrichment courses including: Adventures in Reading, Math Mastering, Lego Mind Storms and Pre-algebra. “Lego Mind Storms touches on a great deal of characteristics relating to engineering such as design, problem-solving, building and experimenting with their own creations,” said Sanchez.

With courses such as these, it really builds up curiosity and pursuance into different types of careers.

Courses relating to the arts offer an introduction into classes such as: Pre-Ballet, Ballet 1, Vocal Studies, Violin, Guitar, Piano I- III, and finally creative crafts for Christmas.

“For the Ballet I course, we have a male instructor conduct the lessons. This really gives younger boys more of a comfort in a dance environment usually dominated by the female gender,” Sanchez said.

“In fact, there have been quite a few young boys who have enrolled for the fall course.”

Each course starts students with either little or no experience. So whether a child has interest academically, artistically or physically, the college tries to offer a variety for their needs.

The Children’s College has a reasonable price range from $30 to $60. The age range is from five to17 years of age.

Overall, the Children’s College offers different opportunities for children to explore courses that appeal to their different individual interests.
