Howard Na kicks off Chopin Music Festival Saturday
By Ameth Barrera

One of the world’s best pianists, Howard Na, will be arriving shortly for the El Paso Chopin Music Festival, a yearly event that has been presented for the past 13 years to the local community.

The festival’s founder and artistic director Dr. Lucy Scarbrough expressed her joy about the yearly full-house attendance by the audience in each show.

The reason why she feels the festival has been so popular is because “…we are giving El Paso what we believe to be a quality show…with some of the best pianists from around the world.”

Howard Na will perform on Sept. 22 at the Chamizal National Memorial Theater and will demonstrate why he has been considered a prodigy since his childhood. He has received many honorary distinctions throughout his years of study in the San Francisco Conservatory of Music.

Na received some of the most prestigious awards at the Russian Music Competition and at the National Chopin Competition in Miami, Florida. These are just a few of the countless awards and prizes that Na has won throughout his career.

Na is described as a “super-pianist with a Polish heart” at the XVI International Chopin Piano Competition in Warsaw by the competition’s director.

Currently a senior at North Texas University, Na is majoring in piano performance, under a music scholarship and as a recipient of the California Governor Scholarship of Academic Course.

The show will start at 8 p.m. and is free of charge.

It is advised to arrive early for the most convenient seating.
