Grandparents in the El Paso area are honored in the nationwide celebration of Grandparent’s Day.

On Sept. 9-10, the Senior Adult Program hosted the 4th Annual Grandparent’s Day celebration at the Cielo Vista Mall. About 100 people were in attendance.

One of the coordinators, Elina Holder, explained the retail venue has been continuously selected for the yearly occasion because “The mall is a very convenient place.”

One of the highlights of the entertainment involved a dancing troupe from Juarez called Grupo Danzon El Nereidas.

“We dance danzon with our feet, interpret it with our mind and feel it in our heart,” said Berta Molinar, one of the dancing instructors.

The event also allowed children to express their feelings towards their grandparents. When asked why they enjoy their elderly family members, a few shared their reasons.

“My grandma cooks and cleans for me, takes me to McDonalds and cares for me,” said 8-year-old Victoria Saucedo.

Six-year-old Jose Brito, in Spanish, said they give me presents, they never get mad, they watch TV with me and let me jump on top of them.

Brito’s younger brother Jesus, 4, added a reason for his appreciation, “They give me presents,” he said.

When asked what they wanted to say to their grandparents they said “that they love them very much.”
