Students have cast their votes and the winner of the
Tejano Mascot Contest has been chosen.
Lluvia Gonzalez, sophomore, was informed on April 24 that she was the winner who has created the new face of the college.
“I am really happy, and I feel grateful because I won,” Gonzalez said. “I didn’t expect to win.”
Her portrayal of a Tejano is now in the works of possibly being seen through a variety of ways at the college.
“We have a committee … that is considering displaying the mascot on banners, caps, and uniforms,” said Monica Robinson, Campus Life representative for Mission del Paso.
Although the students have selected the mascot, the design must still go to the EPCC Board of Trustees for final approval.
“Students want something to wear and show at games and around campus,” Robinson said. “It really gives the students the sense of school spirit.”
For Gonzalez, a graphic design major, it was an intricate task which entailed a few sketches beforehand, she said.
“It took me like a week, but I didn’t work on it every day,” Gonzalez said.
“It was difficult because I didn’t know how to draw a Tejano. I wanted it to look friendly, but then I came up with my idea,” she said.
Gonzalez isn’t the only one excited about the news.
“I think it is wonderful that she won,” said Gonzalez’s art instructor, Jacqueline Mitchell. “She is an outstanding, hard-working art student. She does exceptional work.”
Gonzalez will be awarded a $100 cash prize.
“Maybe I will spend the money on some more art materials and with my family and friends,” said Gonzalez.
Campus Life will soon be proposing a new contest for the development of the Tejano’s name. Students will again have the opportunity to compete.
