Radio La Chusma rocks house at CD release party
By Meagan O'Toole Pitts

Local band Radio La Chusma has released a new CD 91.5 MexM., and film of the group’s album release party is slated to be part of the design of its next CD, due out later this spring..

Metatron and Liquid Cheese also performed at the event, which was held at Club Blu, Feb. 10.

Radio La Chusma includes Ernesto, an outstandingly talented lead singer, guitarist and percussionist; Charlie, bass player and vocalist; Scott, drummer and vocalist, Joel, keyboard player and percussionist; Tim, percussionist; and Annette Rios, better known as “Mistrezz,” who has a 15-year singing career and her own solo CD, Daydreamin’.

The show began with local hip-hop artists Metatron, who ripped such beats as “Real Rap” and passed the stage on to the very entertaining Liquid Cheese after reminding the audience, “El Paso is where we started!”

Liquid Cheese brought true energy to the show with 2 trumpets, 2 guitars, a saxophone, drums and bongos and brilliant vocals. In the middle of its performance, the two trumpet players walked into the audience and played a song from Beetle Juice.

But nobody rocked the house like Radio La Chusma. The band played its unique brand of Latin Reggae Rock from the new CD.
“This music is all its own,” Rios said in a backstage interview. “It’s Afro-Cumbia Reggae Soul, and this band is definitely going somewhere.”

Liquid Cheese joined Radio La Chusma on stage and came together to make music like my ears have never heard. Towards the end of the show, six belly dancers joined the band just below the stage to top off the show.

And if you happened to be at the CD release party, then you were caught on tape during the filming for a music video that is to be featured on Radio La Chusma’s upcoming CD set, scheduled to be released later this spring.

“The CD for Cinco de Mayo is still in progress,” said Richard Wright, marketing and promotions director at Dos Lunas Tequila. “It’s in the process of licensing.”

Dos Lunas Tequila, an El Paso distributor, filmed the show.

“Dos Lunas sponsors Radio La Chusma on some projects,” said Wright.

Admission was only $8 and part of the proceeds went to the Boys and Girls Clubs of El Paso. I could not have imagined spending my Saturday night any other way.

The band is scheduled to play at Acietunas, 5200 Doniphan at 9:30 p.m. on March 22.
