D’Roman a tasty treat
By Christian Betancourt

D’Roman Chocolatier Pasticceria Caffé brings to El Paso a little taste of Europe by offering satisfaction to even the most demanding palate.

The more than 30 desserts including tiramisu, crème brule, French tarts and the finest of chocolates are only part of the delicacies that would complement the five types of gourmet coffees. Their signature Romano coffee, made of the contrasting flavors of espresso, cajeta and rompope, synchronize all the sweet and strong flavors, giving it an intense taste.

The exquisite combination of Belgian and Italian chocolate on the roman chocolate cake creates a delicious sweet-tasting chocolate unlike any other regular chocolate cake. The frosting consists of a bittersweet chocolate that blends flawlessly with the sweetness of the cake.

I discovered the café in November of last year when it first opened, and ever since I tasted the crème brule, I have been a regular. It has just the perfect amount of caramel on top, and the creamy vanilla custard harmonizes the taste of the dessert.

For those interested in a light lunch or dinner, Panini sandwiches are offered with their signature chipotle-infused bread and choice of meats and cheeses. The ham provolone, which includes spinach, tomatoes and pickles, compliments the taste of their homemade bread and delicatessen products.

The staff is always attentive to their customers and will even offer complimentary tastes of new recipes for anyone lucky enough to be present at the time of the creation.

“We only use the finest ingredients to prepare our desserts and everything is made from scratch. We don’t use frozen products, and everything begins with a sack of flour,” said Dora Roman, owner of the bakery/coffee shop.

It is thanks to Roman’s attention to detail and dedication that every bite of her desserts brings memories of the old continent to her customers.

Prices for desserts range from $4 to $5, coffees cost from $1 to $3 and Panini sandwiches are priced at $6.

All cakes are also sold by the slice and orders are accepted for special events.

Roman plans to keep the business small in order to offer considerate attention to her customers. Like many cafés, wireless Internet is available for those with portable computers.

The pastry shop is located on the eastside, off the Zaragosa exit from the I-10 freeway and is open seven days a week. For more information call 855-8118.
