The EPCC Tejanas have struggled so far this season (4-20) but hope to close conference play on an upward note with more than half the season still remaining.

Tejanas still learning how to play together

There are two words that the girls will be concentrating on this week, “team bonding,” which will be their theme as they enjoy two weeks off.

“We have the skills, but we just need to put it all together,” said head coach Mandy Gamboa.

The Tejanas are just 4-20 overall this season, and 3-9 in conference play.

Errors have been the deciding factor in the team’s last two series, each resulting in losses.

Plays that should be routine outs have been bobbled by the Tejanas, which meant more runs for their opponents.

“We need to stop the errors, that’s what’s killing us,” said Gamboa. “The teams are not outplaying us.”

The Tejanas have allowed over 18 runs in their previous four games.

The pitching has improved since the beginning of the season, as the pitchers now seem to be getting into their routine.

Earlier in the season, Gamboa would have to go deep into her bullpen earlier than she wanted to.

But now her starting pitchers are performing better and going deeper into the games, which helps eliminate overworking her bullpen.

Offensively, the Tejanas have proven that they can get on base.

But they have left runners in scoring position way too often.

“They came to me knowing how to hit,” said Gamboa. “We just need to have the mentality that when our runners are in scoring position, we’ve got to bring our runners home.”
