EPCC offers Microsoft Office at huge discount
By Marina Glower

The 2007 Microsoft Office Professional Plus software package, which costs hundreds of dollars, will soon be available at a discount for EPCC students and full-time faculty and staff beginning Feb. 25.

The software which includes Access, Communicator, Excel, InfoPath, Outlook, PowerPoint, Publisher and Word, retails at the suggested price of $499.95, according to Dr. Jenny Giron, AVP for Instructional Resources and Technology.

“This opportunity facilitates the learning process and accessibility of the latest technology,” said Giron.

All EPCC Academic Computing Services (ACS) labs will be offering the package for $62 for all EPCC students, and $6 for full-time faculty and staff.

According to Debbie Aguilera, manager of Technical Support and Services, part-time faculty and staff are not eligible customers, but she and her department are working to make it available for them also. Business student, Nidal Freitekh, said he thinks this is a good thing for students.

“This will help us to be on the same level as the college. Some students have the 2003 version, so when they come to
campus, they have to convert it to 2007, and a lot of times, they’re not familiar with the upgrade,” Freitekh said. “I hear them say ‘How do I print?’ or ‘How do I save?’”

A total of 300 copies will soon be available, with each ACS lab selling 50 to 60, but copies will increase based on the demand, said Giron.

Students must pay at the cashier’s office then present their receipt at any ACS lab. There, they will need to sign license agreement forms before receiving the software, which includes instructional guides for installment.

Fabiola Rubio, vice president of Information Technology, has been working with Microsoft representatives and allowed for this opportunity to happen by signing an agreement with the computer software giant.

Faculty and staff must purchase the software at Rubio’s office, ACS, room A214.

This promotion follows the discounted Dell computers, and laptop check-out program, which began last year.
