As the presidential race streams throughout the country, a local race took place as candidates deliberated over the sheriff position at the Candidate Forum Debate on Feb. 13 at the Transmountain Forum Theater.
The eight contestants, after introducing themselves and providing their agenda, answered questions from a panel within a two-minute timeframe.
“Community relations is a very good start,” said Lt. Marvin Carrasco Ryals, 30-year veteran of the El Paso Sheriff Department, in response to a question regarding the biggest, current issue in the department.
“Giving the community a voice,” said Carlos Leon, former El Paso police chief.
When asked about the topic of secluding prisons, all candidates opposed except for Larry G. Wilkens, who was the commander of both the El Paso County and East Montana Annex jails.
“Portions can be privatized,” he said.
The candidates then responded to the audience in an open forum.
The event was sponsored by Daniel Anchondo, chairman of the El Paso Democratic Party, EPCC Student
Leadership, Campus Life, SGA and Phi
Theta Kappa.
EPCC students and faculty assisted with the debate, such as Beatriz Cuartas, government instructor and coordinator, Rana Wheeler and Bryan Miskimen, student time-keepers, and panelists Lynn Salas, associate professor of government, Melissa Troyer, SGA treasurer, and Darcy Traffansted, Texas regional vice president of Phi Theta Kappa, District one.
Registered voters will have yet another chance to meet with the Sheriff candidates before the March 4 election at the ASC board room, located at 9050 Viscount Blvd., on Feb. 21 at 6 p.m.
