The Association for Women in the Community College (AWCC) is reviewing applicants for scholarship for returning women.
Three qualifying students will be awarded $500 for summer 2008 tuition.
“In the past it was $400,” said Lupe Silva, AWCC President. “This year, we are only awarding three scholarships instead of four.”
The winners are required to enroll for a minimum of six credit hours during the 2008 summer semester.
“The minimum requirement of classes is two and we didn’t think $400 would be enough for the students to pay tuition,” said Silva. “So, this summer we made it $500.”
Applicants must also have a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or better. Applications are available at all Financial Aid Offices. The application packet, which includes a one-page essay, must be mailed or returned to the Financial Aid Office by March 7.
The AWCC has been awarding women scholarships at EPCC for over a decade. The number of students awarded each year fluctuates.
“We want to assist as many students as possible with financial aid for the summer because there is not much financial help for students in the summer,” Silva said. “Our main purpose is to award scholarships to women but the quantity we can award all depends on how our fundraisers go.”
The AWCC recently raised money for scholarships at the EPCC Theatre Ensemble performance of Pippin, last month.
To volunteer in fundraising functions, contact AWCC at any campus. The AWCC is non-profit and all revenue is accumulated from fundraisers and donations.
“We network and participate in service projects but our main agenda is hosting fundraisers,” said Silva. “New officers are coming in June. Then, we may implement new projects for new fundraisers. As of now, we have an estimated 60 volunteer members.”
Scholarship recipients will be notified by April 9.
