The Chicano (a) Studies program increased its productivity this year, 2008, by making classes more accessible and by introducing more classes such as government and the introduction of Chicano (a) studies. The name of the program was customized since previously it was called Chicano studies and due to the great importance and the role women take in the culture, the “a” was added to the name.
The Chicano (a) Studies program is a great opportunity for everyone as this field is increasing. Also, it allows everyone to know more about the story of the culture that exists in the United States and in El Paso ; being a border town it has a greater cultural diversity.
In an interview with Mauricio Rodriguez, EPCC English and Chicano (a) Studies instructor, Rodriguez talked about the importance that this culture has in the country as it has people from different places. A person does not need to be of a certain country to acquire the Chicano culture, said Rodriguez. He also spoke about the importance of the classes given in the college, it is to announce the origins of Chicano studies and how these have evolved since only a person can acquire the Chicano's title on their own because no one was born being a Chicano and nobody can impose the title without the consent of another person
even when he is of different
origin.
Due to the great demand that the Chicano (a) studies program has acquired, this semester an extra class was added. Altogether there are three classes available at the Valle Verde campus. In 2009 the program will be implemented at the Mission del Paso campus.
