27 Dresses a delightful fit

After finding box office gold with last year’s hit Knocked Up, actress Katherine Heigl returns to theaters in the new release of the romantic comedy 27 Dresses.

It’s an exaggerated tale that follows the film’s main tagline “Always a bridesmaid, never a bride.”

Heigl plays the part of Jane, a devoted, dependable bridesmaid that seems to be satisfied standing at the side of the ceremony, but is secretly in love with her boss George (Edward Burns).

Jane goes to and fro a couple of wedding receptions, which are both being held at the same time.

Meanwhile, an aspiring journalist, Kevin (James Mardsen), is looking for a great opportunity to break away from his boring column and finds a romantic interest in Jane.

He gets lucky when she’s caught in a head-on collision at the throwing of the bouquet toss and gets knocked down, so he runs to her aid and discovers his big break.

Not too much later he discovers why Jane has really been running around like a mad woman and decides that his big break for the next great story stands in front of him.

In the end, 27 Dresses pretty much follows the standard of most romantic comedies, where the lead character role has an unrequited love with someone who’s interested in someone else.

At the same time, the “right guy” stands nearby and only hopes to be noticed without having to try too hard.

It lacks some of the satire we’d expect from the screenwriter Aline Brosh McKenna, who also wrote The Devil Wears Prada, yet it still delivers some good quality.

If you’re looking for a good date-filler, or just a good feel-good comedy, then 27 Dresses is a film to recommend.

It’s nothing compared to Juno, but it has some spunk and is not a total drag. It’s well worth a good five bucks.
