Merger to assist students with careers
New center combines job, transfer planning

There’s something new at EPCC’s Career Services , a merger between the Job Placement/Cooperative Education Program and the Transfer/Career Planning Services.

Prior to last November, students who needed assistance from these departments had to travel between the sectors to get assistance.

“Students would get lost,” said Aurea Garcia, student assistant of the Career Services Center.

Now as students enter the CSC, located at the VV Student Services Center, they will be met by a student

assistant and staff members that have been cross-trained to help students with all areas of the departments.

“I work very closely with the students,” said Carla Cardoza, director of Career Services. She explained the reason for this change. “To better serve the students,” she said.

“Students now benefit when they come for one service and get two or more services,” Cardoza added.

The CSC is divided into three departments, the Career Center, the Cooperative Education Program and the Job placement.

The Career Center offers a self-assessment exam, called E-Discover, career explorations and scholarships.

E-Discover is a self-assessment exam that helps students discover their career path, based on their interest, work values and abilities.

“E-Discover is a tool that helps students with career aspirations,” said Cardoza.

In the Cooperative Education Program and Job Placement departments, students learn job skills, training and resume writing.

Online job listings with referrals and contact information are also available.

The Career Corner is a database that was implemented online to offer students an opportunity to show any jobs related to their field of study.

This service is also available to EPCC alumni.

The Transfer Center provides seminars, the Texas Common Course Admissions applications, transfer guides, college catalogs and university exploration software.

Workshops will be available online that will include writing resumes, learning successful interview skills, mock interviews and transferring to a four-year college.
