Hard work pays off for Enriquez
By Kyleen Almendarez

“Champions keep playing until they get it right,” said prominent tennis player Billie Jean King. This is a quote that Cori Enriquez can certainly relate to.

When Enriquez was only 4, she began playing an array of sports but found that softball was not only easy for her but also the most rewarding.

This native El Pasoan played all through her school years, but was met with an obstacle when her coach told her that she would probably never play at the college level.

Despite receiving this crushing information, Enriquez went on to play at Montwood High School where she won several awards including MVP and the All-District Player.

This freshman continued to play softball in college after enrolling at EPCC in the fall. She is currently taking twelve credit hours and is dedicated to softball, even though it takes a lot of her time.

“I can put her anywhere and she’ll do a great job,” said Coach Amanda Gamboa. “She is taking on the role of a freshman leader.”

The 18-year-old expressed what she loved about the sport she had hung onto since she was little.

“I love the adrenaline and the
competitiveness of the sport,” she said.
Enriquez usually plays catcher but prefers to play short stop for the Tejanas.

Although pursuing a degree in physical therapy, Enriquez said that she is capable of coaching a softball team, but she would rather finish with her degree plan, and then find a job in her field.

Enriquez said she will continue to play softball whether it’s at UTEP or any other college.

“I love to prove people wrong.”
