| Expectations high for EPCC Tejanos By Andy Acosty With 19 of the 25 players being freshmen, conventional wisdom would be that this team is too young and inexperienced to contend for a conference title. But don’t tell that to Coach Shannon Hunt or his players. A swagger can be seen from a very confident and energized Tejanos team, which is looking forward to more than just a rebuilding year. “I don’t believe in youth per say. I believe in ability. It’s a good young team with a lot of ability,” said Hunt. “It’s just their first year in school, but that has nothing to do on how good they are.” The Tejanos split their first games of the season last week with Scottsdale CC. EPCC won 7-2 and 3-2 on Saturday, and lost 8-5 and 12-9 on Sunday. The Tejanos have practiced since August, working on creating team unity. The Tejanos believe that they are a strong team, especially on the mound. Much is expected from 6’3” freshman, Erik Bjork. “He is just lights out,” said Hunt. The rest of the pitching rotation is solid with four freshmen and a sophomore. “This is a good young team that will be back next year,” Hunt said. “You can’t expect them to be perfectly ready by the beginning of the spring, but you want to navigate them that way so by May, when it’s playoff time and you’re in playoff contention.” Hunt added that giving it their all and playing like veterans is what’s expected of this season’s freshman players. “I expect out of them their ability to go out there and play to their ability. I don’t expect them to play as freshmen; I expect them to play to their best ability.” EPCC returns to action this weekend for a four-game series with Phoenix’s South Mountain CC. The doubleheaders at Tejanos Field this Friday and Saturday begin at noon. |
