Most people think that Mardi Gras is only about partying, drinking and beads.
Michelle Ruiz, campus life representative, believes that it has a righteous purpose.
It is because of her belief that she brought this celebration to EPCC.
“It is more than partying, it is a time to initiate a change from bad habits to positive, healthy and good habits,” she said.
Ruiz hosted the event on Feb. 5.
She informed students at the Cafeteria Annex of the historical significance of Mardi Gras.
People who attended received a complimentary slice of cake.
They also received beads and the chance to decorate a mask to take home.
The phrase “Fat Tuesday” comes from the French language with “mardi” meaning day of the planet Mars and “gras” means “fat.” The Roman Catholic’s see it as a pre-lenten period beginning on Ash Wednesday.
