STS students get hands-on training
By Griselda Espinosa

In 2005, the Student Technology Services (STS) opened as a service for all EPCC students to obtain hands-on training in the field of technology, while being paid for it.

STS has students working at all campuses. This program helps students with professional work habits, technical training, soft skill training, time-management skills, interaction with diverse populations, team-building, creative problem-solving and supervisory experience.

The program is staffed and managed by students. Currently, there are 50 students in the program and more are joining everyday at no cost.

This is a part-time job and STS employees are paid $6.25 an hour and are required to work a minimum of 12 hours or up to a maximum of 19. Payment is every month. Also there are monthly meetings to get follow-ups on what is going on in the program.

Members of the Student Technology Services program learn a variety of professional skills to help them succeed.

“Our goal is to help students have hands-on training, preferably in the field of technology or in their field of study,” said LaShaun Patterson, STS manager, who has been an active member of STS since it began.

While with the program, Patterson moved from campus to campus getting all the experience he needed. The experience he gained enabled him to reach a management position.

To become a member of the STS program, students need the following: a copy of their current schedule, a resume, a transcript, a letter of interest and a minimum GPA of 2.5. Application should be made at the Administrative Service Center located at 9050 Viscount, in Building A, Room 219.

“I will be majoring in marketing and being a member of this program has helped me by providing communication skills, business skills, and how to work as a team,” said Patterson.

The program also goes a long way toward building the students’ self- esteem.

“I like this program because they gave me the opportunity to get experienced in different technology fields,” said Julieta Del Valle, EPCC student and STS employee. “This program has helped me gain self-confidence and a better way to communicate with others.”
