Letter to the Editor
By J. Manny Baca, Coordinator, Ophthalmic Technology Program

I would like to correct certain statements written in the article “Affordable Clinics at RG Serve Students and Public,” that appeared on page 4, of the Nov. 16, 2006 issue.  The Ophthalmic Program does not “provide eye exams to students at affordable prices” and it does not “provide contact lenses.”

These can only be provided legally by licensed Optometrists and Ophthalmologists in the state of Texas.  What the Ophthalmic Technology Program does provide is the 20/20 Clinic, where all EPCC students, faculty, staff and family members may buy eyeglasses at affordable prices, as long as they provide a current prescription.

During the Spring, we may ask for volunteers so that students may practice refracting and contact lens fitting skills as part of assigned tasks.  None of those two will provide eyeglasses nor contact lenses that the volunteer may keep.  On occasion we may help certain students who cannot afford to pay for a prescription or eyeglasses, but only as an emergency and for a temporary basis, if they are referred to us by a faculty or staff member of the college.
