The EPCC Art Student Society held its fourth annual Empty Bowls Soup Line Art Event, which raised money for the West Texas Food Bank.
The founder, Mary Scott, assistant professor of art discipline, was unable to attend due to health, but Linda Gonzalez, home care support specialist, hosted the event.
“I’m guessing that attendance was between 250 and 300, and that about $3,000 was
collected this year, which is about the same amount that has been collected in previous years,” said Alma Miller, broker associate and event volunteer.
The soups were prepared by EPCC’s Culinary Art department, along with chefs from Riverside High School, Il Posto restaurant, El Dorado High School, Mesa St. Grille Restaurant,” said Suzi Holcomb, culinary arts lab assistant.
Besides offering a variety of soups, such as French onion, chicken noodle, tomato, Asian, tortilla, potato and steak soup, there was a mix of live music performed, as well.
Classical, contemporary and jazz were presented by the Ariosa String Quartet, Memento Mori and Jazz Unlimited Combo, respectively.
The $10 fundraising ticket included hot soup, bread, bottled water and a selection of ornamental ceramic bowls designed by art students and their instructors.
“The Empty Bowls is a grassroots effort that is totally dependent on volunteers and donations. Considering the apprehension that the current doom-and-gloom hype about the economy is causing, I would say that the El Paso Empty Bowls 2008 event did very well,” said Miller.
