EPCC holding mascot contest
By Laura Lozano

The first things that may come to students’ minds regarding EPCC are the numerous campuses located around the city, the highly-respected nursing program and the fact that it is widely accepted as the “best place to start” an education.

However, one of the things that may not come to mind is a school mascot, mainly because there isn’t one.

Finally, this is about to change thanks to the Tejano Mascot Contest, by Campus Life.

While UTEP students flaunt their mascot by wearing apparel depicting Paydirt Pete, EPCC students only have the circular teal logo to represent their college.

The college is searching for its first mascot and it is up to current EPCC students to design it. The contest officially began on Jan. 22 and will run until March 1. The aim is to offer a true representation of a Tejano. Therefore, the mascot design must depict a compelling Tejano character.

“The mascot needs to be a lifelike image, nothing cartoonish,” said Monica Robinson, Campus Life representative. “It is really [about] the different views and interpretations of the artist.”

The winner, which will be selected by a committee composed of administrators, faculty and students, will be announced on April 1. The winning designer will receive a $100 cash prize.

The new mascot may be displayed throughout the college. One place the mascot may regularly appear is at EPCC sporting events.

“I think it would be great to have a mascot at the games, both baseball and softball,” said Dana Eisenga, athletics information program coordinator. “We definitely need that.”

Some feel the creation of an EPCC mascot may further improve the college’s image.

“The reference of ‘Comedy College’ has always bothered those of us who feel that EPCC is a worthy institution of higher learning,” Robinson said. “Hopefully the addition of a school mascot will show that we are a serious contender and viable option for students seeking a great place to start their college education.”

Students may submit more than one entry.
